Our year 8 and 9 girls met with ex England womens rugby prop and current Sky Sports Living for Sports athlete mentor Katie Storie yesterday. During Katie’s visit organised by PE teachers Miss Shakespeare and Miss Irving all of the girls in years 8 and 9 were given a motivational speech by Katie in which she explained her life story and how she went on to become one of the best female rugby players in the country.
Girls Active is an initiative that Miss Shakespeare and Miss Irving are running which aims to recognise that girls’ needs differ and change as they mature and that girls themselves are uniquely positioned to ‘sell’ PE and sport to other girls.
Girls Active offers a simple flexible action planning framework to help teachers and girls work together to address their particular issues. It is based on the Youth Sport Trust-developed principles of student engagement, such as student voice and leadership, alongside innovative approaches to marketing.
Miss Shakespeare said “Today has been a real success and the extra motivation the students received from having Katie visit will hopefully spur more girls on to become more involved in sport and ‘Get Active’
